mysilv asked:

I’ve just read that THE BBC has been offered coverage of Newmarket’s Guineas festival and Champions Day fixture from 2010 in a bid to try to save part of the corporation’s racing portfolio and that Doncaster are even considering switching the St. Leger.

This would have a terrible effect on Channel 4 who could be forced to pull the plug on their racing coverage.

Worst still the BBC would combine the Guineas meeting with their coverage of the Badminton Horse Trials. Now as much as I love horses and horse trials, the Newmarket Guineas Meeting is the Crown Jewels of Racing as far as I and many other punters are concerned and to have to put up with breaks in the racing whilst the BBC switch from one venue to the other is unacceptable.

There is a petition that has been drawn up by Gt. Leighs spokeswoma Pippa Cuckson in the fight to save threatened BBC fixtures which can be signed by all British Citizens and Ex Pats which calls upon Mr Brown to request that the BBC retain its current levels of horse racing coverage as befits a public service broadcaster and to reinstate the 15 days that it proposes to scrap from 2010.

Anyone wishing to add their name to the petition should go to http://petitions.number10.gov.uk/bbcracing/

I feel that we should consider signing this petition, but we should also be on the case for Channel 4 not to lose its coverage of the Guineas, Champions and St. Leger Meetings.

What are your thoughts, it feels that our racing is under attack from all angles and we must do something to save it…Jac x

Edit: Tues 6th Jan..
Cheers Sir Alan for giving NetImp a roasting..my sentiments exactly. Perhaps he would rather watch a Master Class in vote fixing on the BBC.
Pelargoniums & Hendrix rule…..thanks for that lets hope Talksport can round up lots of support. If the BBC think they will get a fashoin show out of the Guineas meeting they will be sorely disappointed, it can be freezing on the Rowley Mile in May and gale force winds were blowing last meeting. Lydia Hislop & co. will have to sort out their thermals for that one (on reflection probably a better choice than her last Ascot frock)…
The Blue Shadow: 100% agree the BBC should be made to concentrate more on the racing and the horses, and at Royal Ascot get rid of the Weather Girl and Chris Hollins hobnobbing around the Royal Enclosure talking to posers who know nothing about racing.
Debzc to cut the racing from the BBC completely would be a disaster for the sport and those who cannot get out to the races and love watching it on the TV. We need a top rate service from BBC and Channel 4 and a promise that this will not be interrupted with Cricket, Tennis, Darts , Snooker or any other sport.
Yesterday BBC2 devoted the WHOLE DAY to World Darts so why couldn’t they use BBC2 ..for their racing/sports coverage, and if they really have to… give people the red button option to change to a different sport as they so wish.

Petition Update:
416 signatures to date and 11 pages long, last date to sign 2/4/2009.
I signed a couple of days ago and sent it out to all my email contacts…Jac x

Oh David G I do understand your grievances, but like a lot of people, I can’t get racing on Satellite TV unless I pay for it. I don’t get ATR either so I would have to go down the bookies to watch the big races.
It could also mean that lots of people within the racing industry would be out of work, that’s not on in this day and age.
Nearly 1800 signatures to date…thanks to all who have signed…the BBC mustn’t lose its racing coverage..Jac x

Get rid of racing, F1, Bowls, Tiddy-winks and whatever else the BBC waste my license fee on and buy back the England football games off that awful channel Setanta!

Jac
This would be just the type of excuse that some big-wig from Channel 4 needs to justify pulling the plug on racing. It’s a shame that racing coverage depends on the whim of one or two executives at the Beeb and C4.
The BBC must not get their hands on Newmarket and Doncaster. It would be like rewarding a spoilt child for being bold! What will happen to all the other Newmarket fixtures that C4 usually cover throughout the season? They’re not going to accept the scraps from the BBC’s table. The same with Donny.
And I’m fully in agreement with you about them cutting into the racing with other sports. Remember when the Beeb used to show Test Match cricket in between the racing? We’d be lucky to see the horses before they were put into the starting stalls.
They can’t get away with this. At the end of the day at least Channel 4 have shown some level of commitment towards racing. It would be grossly unfair if the BBC got their hands on something that Channel 4 have done a lot to build up.

Edit:
NetImp: You obviously know nothing about racing. The races we’re talking about such as the 1000 Guineas, 2000 Guineas and St Leger are not handicaps!
And by your hypothesis then the BBC shouldn’t cover football either because that attracts almost as much betting as horse racing does these days. And what about rugby, boxing, darts, snooker and tennis? These are all sports which attract large amounts of gambling as well.
Maybe they should just show Songs Of Praise and endless repeats of Last of the Summer Wine all day long?

NetImp January 30, 2009

The BBC should drop horse racing altogether it is not a sport. Its sole purpose is gambling, a sport doesn’t handicap the best competitors to artificially make the result closer . As public service broadcaster the BBC should not be encouraging gambling.

Dun it Jac. but guess the Brown jobbie will be too busy hiding from his CxxK up of the economy to do anything about it.

Already done it!

Sir Alan has stated the vast majority of the facts, but the one thing that really gets me about BBC racing is it is so downmarket considering the prestige events they already cover. Perhaps getting the Guineas- god forbid!- will give them an opportunity to stage a 2 day fashion show just like Ascot.

the culling by the bbc would be sad to see really, but channel 4 losing the guineas and champions day, which in turn gives them a reason to cull there racing would be a greater travesty to racing.i cant believe newmarket would even consider this

channel 4 are there every saturday giving us dedicated racing.even when there main meeting gets abandoned, they show extra racing from elsewhere instead of putting a old black and white film on.

f.a.o netimp, maybe the bbc shouldnt show the lottery then as that is gambling, wouldnt you agree?

debzc February 3, 2009

No, the BBC has no commitment to racing and should give the whole thing up. They offer poor coverage, and can’t even give the high profile races they cover any commitment!Get shut of it!

The Blue Shadow February 3, 2009

Channel 4 has done much more for racing than the BBC, I really hate the stupid items on fashion etc. they think they need to put on in the intervals. They should put more emphasis on the real stars of the show (horses and jockeys). Channel 4 Racing is a much better show than the Beebs it is less snobbish, light-hearted and you can tell the people involved really love horse-racing as a sport in its own right. LONG LIVE McCRIRRICK :))

Tis signed.

David G February 10, 2009

it would be sad if the beeb pulled the plug on racing but to be honest the coverage is garbage. and always will be and i honestly dont think racing would suffer as a result. we are in the 21st century we can watch racing all day long on satellite TV . good riddance that’s what i say
