well there is no answer to that as far as exact figures go. a few years ago a small little horse was bought for about $6,000 and he went on to be a contender in the derby.. this horse was bred from unknowin parents but had the right mentality, conformation and heart to go big. on the other hand you can spend millions and end up with a horse that never maked it to the track, that is a once in a lifetime event however and not the norm. One thing about horses is its a gambel and almost no one ever makes money off of them unless they’re a horse trader, a vet (and they really dont make as much as you think they do) or a breeder and even most of them do not do it for the money as they will end up broke a few times over before finding that one great sire to breed and even then have to spend a ton on him. you can buy a race horse however as little as a few hundred to a few thousand dollars if you do not want a hugley sucessful one or an retired one..a pure bred race horse can even be adopted for free sometimes if you just want a lawn ornament. as far as getting in the buisness if you have absolutly no experince you first need to learn barn management andhow to ride. once you get those down you may want to go to a few farms and work as a barn manager (if its a small place you feed, water, hay, clean the stalls, groom and lounge for starters, a big place is less hands on and you will not be a barn manager for many years untill you prove yourself capable).. the other way is to become an exercise rider and again if you do not have alotttttttt of experience riding then i dont suggest it.. the pay is pretty low in the beggining but the satisfaction can be high… best of luck to you .. from there on its just a matter of working your way up and either becomming a breeder, trainer or jockey.. thats all up to you

My neighbor shoes race horses and sells them for a living. He has had some fetch well over a million for 1 horse. I have owned retired race horses that were not top of the line and paid only a couple thousand for them. I would suggest attending a race or two then checking out the breeders web pages. The better the pedigree, the more you are going to pay.

Depending on when you buy the horse(the horses age), you could purchase a horse from as little as $1000 , or as much as several million dollars.

You can buy a claimer or $3000. Mind you this is a horse someone is trying to get rid of. Sometimes Claimers can become good if retrained. The cost afterward is quiet a bit and entirely up to you how well you want to take care of the animal. But I will tell you, a pampered horse will do better on the track.

it can be as little as a few thousand dollars. Horses can be bought and claimed for very little. But, before you jump in, you should know a lot more about it. If you’re serious about learning more, TOBA has some great seminars often with top talent in the business telling you information from experience. Here’s their site look for new owner seminars.
