Iskandar asked: I must sound naive, but I don’t really know. I’m sure there are other greater events of it’s kind (maybe in the UK), though how does the Melbourne cup stand it in all, on a global level?
Or is it known world wide, though mainly exclusively for the horse racing folk?
Or not known at all?
wow I didn’t realise
Horse Racing Basics
It’s right up there with the Grand National steeplechase and the Kentucky Derby, it’s one of the world’s great horse races.
Yes - it’s known world-wide.
The Melbourne Cup is regarded as the most prestigious “two-mile” handicap in the world.
Alot of foreign-trained horses entered are just not from Australia.
yeh it’s massive
people in hong kong bet in it
a relative of mine who owns heaps of horses comes down every year
If you do a little research you will find a story about when samuel clements ( aka Mark Twain..of Tom Sawyer fame) visited the Melbourne cup during the 1800’s ..
it is a globally recognised race.
I’m not particularily fond of it because the horse race is a few minutes long .. and I get the whole day off for it .. HOWEVER .. because it is only a public holiday in only part of the state…our work-load the next day is actually TWO full days of work .. and we bust our guts to get it done……
Oh well at least I can rest on the day of the race.
