horse racing
me asked:

I like answering horse racing questions but most of the questions are about recreational horseback riding and so on. Does Yahoo not give “Pets>Horses” as the option for these questions’ placement? Just curious.
There is a specific category for horses; please check.
This creates fewer qualified answers in this category, because those that know horse racing stop checking and thus stop answering.

people are confused, just asking questions about horses or in general no crime in that..

i noticed that when is ask a question there are not pin point categories to list them, rather something that could seem far out at first glance. there are only 2 places to ask about horses it seems, one of which seems to be more girly, farm, show, dressage, basic care. the other allows the non horseman to get their opinions in about who will win the derby, best race horse ever, more serious questions about the business end of racing. i check both, it seems the dressage/show people are a different breed than the racing folk.

no, yahoo does not have that category. but it does have pets and that is where those questions should be.

I think that the single biggest reason for this is because a lot of people who come on here are still unaware that there is a seperate section for questions from people who have or ride sport horses instead of racehorses. When I first joined YA in the late winter of 2007, this WAS the ONLY horse oriented column on here- there was no other. It took MANY MONTHS of writing and complaints by myself and others before YA FINALLY WISED UP and gave us non racing horse people a section of our own in the “Pets” column. However, just because I was aware of the change, that doesn’t mean everyone is, especially if they are new to YA.

The other thing you need to realize is that YA is a computer generated service. The people who run it are people who are only there to make sure the system works, not to do things like categorize questions for people. Computers are notoriously bad at screening questions appropriately-which is why we still see questions in this column about things like greyhound racing and even about car racing, although there is a seperate motorsports column. If you get a chance, try visiting the Yahoo Sports section, and click the link for “horse racing”. Notice how many of the articles in THAT section are about CARS, NOT HORSES, and about events like NASCAR races. There are a LOT of them, I can tell you. It’s almost as if the people at Yahoo can’t quite figure out that just because something has the word “racing” in it, DOESN’T necessarily mean it belongs in the horse racing section. I rely on that column as a means of keeping in touch with what’s happening in the sport of horse racing, and believe me, I get mighty tired of reading about the ridiculous tribulations of people like Danica Patrick, who was stopped for speeding and DUI sometime before Christmas. Who gives a SH*T about her? I don’t follow NASCAR- in fact, I find it disgusting in a lot of ways. I could care less when one of their people gets stopped for something which the rest of us generally know enough to avoid.

That’s just my two cents’ worth. And by the way, for Mr. Two Cents: horse sports are NOT “girly” sports, as you put it. I hate to deflate your balloon ( not to mention your overinflated male ego) but ALL the horse sports in events like the Olympic Games were invented and developed by MEN, and for decades after they were introduced to the modern Games, women were PROHIBITED from competing because of their gender. The first female equestrians in the Olympic Games competed in 1952. Prior to this, the teams from every country which competed were all male, and MOST OF the riders were cavalry or military officers. Our own USET didn’t even emerge as a civillian organization until 1950, in fact, and even after it was created, it was largely controlled by former military officers for the next several decades. It also took DECADES for women to establish themselves and become competitive on the international stage- the situation which exists now is one that has only come about in the last twenty or so years, as women have finally come into their own, so to speak. So think about THAT, the next time you want to call horse sports “girly”. I could call football and basketball players a lot of names too, NONE of which are polite. I happen to think that the great majority of THEM, in fact, are MORONS.

Enough said.

and geez, silly me thought you were referring to the other stupid
questions that do not have a thing about horses, racing or any
thing intelligent

i agree the horse racing forum should be strictly for horse racing discussions and questions. now that does include TB racing, Quarter horse racing, harness racing, barrel racing and steeple chasing.
the problem is there is no show jumping or eventing category so i think since those are in fact sports the most appropriate place for questions related to those sports would be in this forum over pets horses. its yahoos fault not the people asking the questions. they really need their own category on here.

and remember its winter not much excitement in horse racing right now but once the derby preps start almost all the questions will be horse racing related.
