The credibility of the author:
Thirty one year old Edward Attwood is the author of “Small island, big plans” who is British national based in Dubai. He is currently working as a senior reporter on the (AB), Arabian Business website which involves reporting and feature-writing on a variety of fields including (but not limited to) finance, real estate, energy and transport. Ed has been known for working in a lot of countries in the Middle East and the Gulf Co-operation Council (GCC) in particular, and before moving to the (GCC) two years ago, he worked on the Middle East desk of a US-based company called Global Insight which is a political and an economical forecaster for more than fourty years. Before GI, he worked for a law firm for a few years before eventually deciding that he did not want to be a lawyer, also before that he got his BA honors degree in English, literature from a UK University (2001)(E. Attwood, personal communication- Email, March 18, 2010).
It appears that Ed has the experience in writing these types of topics because he has been writing for a large number of websites and magazines mostly about the Middle East and the (GCC) countries and since he is living there for a period of time. Moreover he is an expert writer and from the information that he is mentioning in the articles so we can say that he is credible.
It is possible to say that Ed has a motivating perspective in writing his articles which are globalization, open market and free trade which makes him a believer of capitalism and development. However when it comes to his assumptions politically I think that he is a bias for not mentioning any types of political views and for giving positive attitude towards Bahrain and the other (GCC) countries when it comes to growing. But yet this does not make a reader stop criticizing his writings and beliefs!
The timelines of the reading:
“Small island, big plans” was published in Friday the 26th February 2010, Publication date tends to be important because It is a grand way to stay in touch with the customers and to keep the writers name out there in a positive way (if he is mentioning a positive topic), readers will remember the name of the article and writer when they need what he offers as well as sharing it with a friend in a similar need. Nevertheless at the same time it is the future and past.

The intended audience of the reading:
All types of people who are interested in business, logistics, real estate, telecommunication and finance sector which are business men and women, Middle Eastern and (GCC) investors, tourists, economists and others that may be fairly interested which are freshly graduated students who are called job seekers.
The content of the reading:
There are many ideas brought up in this article but there is a considerable support that despite the fact that Bahrain is bounded by its limited area, in the writers opinion it has the best growing potential to flourish economically in the international arena. However the writer is comparing Bahrain to the other (GCC) countries in its well stabled and rising economy when he mentioned Islamic banking and many other examples of Formula 1, real estate, logistics and finance, therefore showing the reader that Bahrain is way different than the others which he named neighbours; by taking smaller steps into developing instead of jumping all at once.
There are several examples in favor to this idea, such as The Bahrain Grand Prix (Formula 1) when he mentioned tourism or the world of media attention. Durrat Al Bahrain and Reef Island, an artificial island located close to Bahrain’s Financial Harbour as he mentioned housing and real estate. Bahrain Central Bank, The Middle East largest bank by asset size, Emirates (NDB), Global Finance House (GFH), an Islamic investment house that bet heavily on the Gulf’s now battered property markets as he mentioned finance and economics.
Gulf Air and Bahrain Air as he mentioned transport, as well as Holland-based APM Terminals, one of the DP World’s few competitors in the ports trade, masterminded the launch of the $340m Khalifa Bin Salman port – (the Bahrain Gateway). Moreover for logistics as he mentioned the $280m Bahrain Logistics Zone (BLZ) that is expected to be up and running by the end of this year and other sites like The Salman Industrial City include the Bahrain International Investment Park. Saudi Telecom (STC), Zain(2003) and Viva(2010) for telecommunication.
Many ideas and beliefs were supported and quoted in this article by important business men from the Middle East and the (GCC) countries which are Rasheed Mohammed Al Maraj that recently pointed out that despite the amount of building activity in the country, very little of it had been speculative. Dr. Hatim Tahir, the new head of the centre of Islamic banking as he claims: “we decided to build the Islamic finance in Bahrain as we believe the country has substantial

I watched the grand national yesterday with colleagues simply because it was on and the firm had a fun sweep of 25p per horse so the ‘win’ was nominal, even so I refused to take part. I was horrified to see such carnage and danger to horses and riders. The last few minutes of the race was of the riders in the lead whipping their poor horses to go faster. I cannot believe this is allowed! No matter what people say or how they try to get around it - horses are being hit with whips and hard too. I used to go horse riding years ago and we were always told how to use the whip - just a light tap. What I witnessed yesterday was really and truly horses being horsewhipped. All for what? Greedy people gambling huge amounts or minimal amounts of money? Workplaces like mine are just as bad - I was made to feel like a spoilsport for not joining in - why? It is my choice isn’t it? The end result? 2 dead horses and injured jockeys. The people who own and trace the horses are in it for the money of course they are - but do the horses get a choice in whether they want to do it? Do they want to be whipped and made to run in very hot weather? To risk falling and breaking their fragile legs and necks? I and many more are no doubt disgusted and I am interested in hearing why some people think this is OK. The horses cannot speak for themselves, if they could I am sure most would not want to do it. Maybe being horsewhipped ensures that they DO something they don’t want to do.

Hi Folks

My wife and I are both 24 and are looking to do some travelling for 5-7 weeks. We love America and go on vacation there from the UK for most years, but have never got as far as the West Coast.

Ideally we would love to do some sort of road trip in campervan and camp or stay in motels. Can anyone give me some tips on the top things we should do/see?

Obviously things such as Las Vegas, Grand Canyon, are standard. We are thinking of places off the beat and track that us folks from the UK might not have heard about.

I would ideally like to go see some of the National Parks in Vancouver in Canada then make our way down the west coast. Any ideas?

We have a year to plan this trip and are working on a budget between £5,000 - £7,000.

Thanks guys and gals.

OK guys here is my dilemma…
I am living and working in Spain and have been for almost 2 years now. Recently my British passport got stolen and I reported it. Now, to get a new one I have to pay 200€ and it takes 2 months. Going through all the application forms I stumble upon this gem:
Because birth in the United Kingdom* after 31 December 1982 does not automatically confer British citizenship, additional information and documentation is required to establish your national status under the provisions of the British Nationality Act 1981, which came into force on the 1 January 1983.
(I was born in 1987) To throw into the mix, neither of my parents were born in England and only one has since applied and received British nationality (my father, Swiss). My mother is Spanish and holds only Spanish citizenship despite having lived in England some 27 years and given birth and raising her 2 children there.
As states in the passport application forms:
If neither parent was born in the United Kingdom* or a qualifying territory or naturalized/registered as a British national, please give town, country and date of birth of all four grandparents in Section 7 and then return to Section 3.
I do not have (and neither does my mother) said information for her two parents being that she did not grow up with them. I feel that it is very likely that I could be refused the passport/nationality being that essentially I do not live/work in or contribute anything to the country and both my parents are foreigners (one holding dual nationality).
In Spain you have something called the ´family book´ where all births and marriages to/from a Spanish person are registered. I’m not sure about spouses but with children I think it gives them some rights, some kind of leeway in Spain. For example, you would have to be living here for 5 years (working) before being considered for nationality but if you are in the family book that changes (id have to research into how exactly). My mum is pushing for me to get the English passport thinking that as my dad has British nationality I shouldn´t have a problem but I am not convinced. Also, though I know being English gives you many benefits and rights for anywhere you go, Spanish nationality gets you a passport and a DNI which is the national identity card. With the DNI you can travel via plane within Europe without a passport. Meaning, I would not have this problem. Losing the Spanish passport means you have to get a new one but it does not stop or hinder your normal activity in any way being that you have in your possession of the DNI. Plus obviously being much easier to re apply etc if you are in the country of issue. Right now I am living in Spain. Who knows if in the future I will return to England, but in either case, my mum has lived 27 years without any problems as a Spanish passport holder in England. Plus application for the Spanish nationality (being that my birth is registered here as well as being registered in the family book and being half Spanish) would be process A LOT quicker that going for the British.
In the UK they could say yes they could say no but to find that out I have to pay the 200€ and wait the two months. If they say no then I would have to apply for Spanish nationality and I don’t know if that ´no´ from England would affect my chances here as it would obviously all be recorded. So effectively, right now I have no nationality. Apart from the obvious problems that presents me with. In the case that I might need to go to hospital, I have no nationality or identification. In the case that I lose my job, I cannot get another except illegally (cleaner, bar maid). In the case that I’m in a bar or at someone’s house or even in the street and the police are called…

I need to know from you lovely people if I am missing any grand advantage to holding a British passport. If there is something big that being a British citizen gives you that I am not aware of or if it is just general ease.
What would you guys do? Any opinions?

Cheers and sorry for the LONG question!

Illegal immigrants residing in britain often tend to complain about racism and discrimination from society. Whereas I totally renounce racism and all sorts of abuse based on skin color, i would like to advice them not to link every situation to race as they come here through the back doors and expect a grand life.
employment for foreign nationals in uk is purely based within the immigration legal frame works. Already being law brakers, they should not be pushing businesses to infringe on the law and illegally give them jobs.

To come here, some of them had to sail through the hash waves of mediteranian sea, on wooden boats operated by morocan and libyan smugglers. They then enter britain as human cargo on the back of cargo trucks and blend themselves with our society, the vast majority of which are from west africa (ghana, gunea, ivory coast, nigeria, gambia and the like) . The UK continues to fail to effectively deport migrants without visas
